The DSP Development Kit
This development kit is the perfect entry platform for applications that need the ability to individually program the onboard DSP and FPGA (optional FPGA development package required), combined with application software controlled IEEE 1394 connectivity. The main difference between other IEEE 1394 streaming solutions and this one is, that in this case isochronous IEEE 1394 data streaming is performed between onboard RAM and isochronous IEEE 1394, while at other solutions isochronous IEEE 1394 streaming is performed by an extra external hardware streaming interface. Directly interfacing onboard RAM to IEEE 1394 allows close software control over transmitted or received isochronous data packages whereas onboard bus load needs to be considered more carefully. Instead of the external hardware streaming interface, this solution provides the parallel DSP EMIF bus to external I/O pins, including databus, addressbus, decoded chip select lines, read and write strobe lines, interrupt lines etc. This allows easy, glueless external I/O component expansion to the Multi Chip Module. The comfortable use of this kit makes it suitable for system engineers who want to focus on their total system solution as a priority and who want to get an IEEE 1394 solution being realized with a minimum of time and effort.

DSP Master BSP Included
The kit contains the "UC1394a-1 DSP Master BSP". This Board Support Package is necessary to connect the DSP EMIF bus to external I/O pins and to run the IEEE 1394 network as a "black box", just being accessed by a software driver. The BSP furthermore provides an RS232 interface and a number of software programmable digital I/O pins. If individual hardware interfaces for the own application are required then an optional FPGA development package is available which allows developers to design and implement their own hardware connectivity. As an additional customer service, Orsys provides development services for customer specific FPGA designs and software applications.

PC-side IEEE 1394 API software driver also
available
In order to be able to connect the UC1394a-1 to a PC via IEEE 1394, it is necessary to have a certain software driver installed on the PC. This allows to individually program the PC IEEE 1394 Interface in user mode and to transmit or receive isochronous and asynchronous data packets easily under application software control. As an example, the FireAPI Software Development Kit from Unibrain can be recommended, which is available from Orsys. Unibrain PC software drivers are capable to run on any PC, equipped with IEEE 1394a or IEEE 1394b hardware, under Microsoft Windows® NT, 2000, XP or newer.

A part of the micro-lineŽ family
The carrier board used in the kit is compatible with the micro-lineŽ product family. Therefore it is optionally possible to connect the kit with an additional micro-lineŽ peripheral I/O board, like an A to D or D to A converter board. That combination quickly allows to expand the system to an off-the-shelf solution.
